TV Fault

Project May 16, 2020

An interesting fault - areas that should be black started showing a very dark red. I thought I could ignore the fault but after trying to watch a "thriller" movie mostly set at night, it was impossible to ignore.

Greyscale test pattern showing the dark red

Any grey level with a value less than 16 would display as a consistent dark red. Very strange indeed.

As is usually the case, the tv was just out of warranty so I had no option other than to rip the back off and troubleshoot.

My Google Fu indicated a checp replacement driver board would do the trick. Once the back of the tv came off, I realised that was not an option as all that seemed to be integrated into the display - no easily replacable board.

All I was left with was to reseat the 2 lcd ribbon cables and the lvds cable.

Seems that was all that was needed - the tv has functioned perfectly ever since. I would like to claim credit for a skillful repair but it was so very trivial...

And it also seems that the tv had a 3 year warranty. What took more effort - rip the back off and tinker or find the proof of purchase receipt for a warranty claim?
